Buying Wholesale - Online eBay Business Only - California - HELP!?
Hi, I'm trying to start up a strictly online eBay business in California. I'm just confused on what all I need. I want to buy wholesale, so what permits and licenses would I need to buy wholesale? Do I need the business license and the reseller's permit (is the reseller's permit the same as a seller's permit?) and that's it? Or are there other licenses/permits I need? Thanks in advanced.

- You will need a business license and also a tax ID # for every state you plan on collecting tax from. Also, to buy wholesale, you will need several thousand to several hundred thousand dollars to an invest to buy enough to get a sizeable discount...You will also need a warehouse to store the items, along with insurance on the warehouse to cover the contents. You will also need a back up plan to get rid of the merchandise if ebay does not work out. There is a lot to it, but with a lot of work, profits are possible....although when reselling new items like that, the profit margin is usually minimal.
- Hello, have you thought of drop shipping? I don't know what you need to do in the state of CA as far as permits and such. Check out your local Small Business Bureau. With drop shipping you wouldn't need to carry any stock or buy anything wholesale, you would probably get your products below wholesale cost -plus they would be packed and shipped for you with your company name on the box. Just a thought. - Jerome
- You would need to contact your local city government to confirm the licenses that you need (for the city) and your state government to confirm licenses and permits (for the state). Generally a reseller's permit and seller's permit are the same thing. If you are going to sell on EBay I would suggest that you look for products that you personally like and are knowledgeable. Drop shipping is definitely something to explore, but you don't need a warehouse nor do you need to invest a great deal of money. If you do need storage, I would suggest a storage company near you. Get a small unit to begin with and trade up as you need more space. This is a great page for information for the State of California http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/resources.htm Good luck!
